Medication Assisted Treatment

Medication Assisted Treatment
(we call it MAT)
uses medications approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of substance use disorders in combination with counseling and other supports offered at Connections. The medications we currently have available at Connections include methadone and buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid addiction.

Although every patient’s plan of treatment is individually designed, generally you will be expected to attend counseling and/or support sessions more frequently when you first enter the program and less frequently as you progress in treatment and in your recovery. For example, you will likely be asked to come to the clinic for counseling or support service sessions two or three times a week for the first month or so, at least four times a month for the next couple of months and then less frequently after that. If you experience unforeseen complications at any time, you may decide with your counselor that more frequent contacts with the program will be helpful.

The goal of medication-assisted treatment is to recover from addiction. It does NOT replace one addictive drug with another. It provides a safe, controlled level of medication to overcome the use of a problem opioid.

People can safely take treatment medication as long as needed – for months, a year, several years, even for life. Sometimes people feel that they no longer need the medication and would like to stop taking it. Use of methadone and buprenorphine must be stopped gradually to prevent withdrawal. Plans to stop taking a medication should ALWAYS be discussed with a doctor.

NOTE: You do NOT have to test positive for an opiate or other illicit drug to be accepted for MAT.

Our program is designed to help you manage your disease of addiction so that you can achieve long term recovery. For us, recovery means:

  1. The remission of primary and secondary substance use disorders (i.e., no more use of alcohol or drugs that are not legitimately prescribed for you).
  2. Improvement in your personal health and the ability to live a healthy lifestyle.
  3. Positive re-integration with your family and with the community at large, including employment, education, social activities, etc.
For those who participate in the MAT option, generally there are four stages in the process:
  1. Initial Treatment (3 to 7 days) – close medical observation and clinical assessment during the initiation of medication and dosage adjustment.
  2. Early Stabilization (up to 8 weeks) – monitoring of your response to the medication, adjustment of dosage levels as medically indicated and participation in counseling and support services.
  3. Maintenance (as long medically indicated) – maintenance on medication at medically and clinically appropriate levels, less frequent attendance at counseling and support services.
  4. Continuing Care and Medication Assisted Recovery will include periodic check-ups, medical examinations to assure that the medication is still working appropriately for you and that you are not experiencing any side effects that would warrant a change in the medication protocol for you, and to provide any additional support you may need to help continue to self-manage your recovery.
Medication Assisted Treatment uses federally approved medications. These medications will:
  • Lessen the sickness that results from the withdrawal of other opioids.
  • Reduce the craving for opioids.
  • Retain their blocking effects for 24 to 36 hours.
