Connections is one of two providers in Delaware serving veteran families in need through the federally funded Supportive Services for Veteran Families program. This program provides a wide range of support services to very low-income veteran families who are homeless or at imminent risk of becoming homeless. These services include intense case management, access to benefit enrollment, and temporary financial assistance for security deposits, rental assistance, and utility assistance. Connections is providing this program in New Castle, Kent, and Sussex Counties and assistance is available based on need and eligibility.
Connections is also providing housing for veterans who need supportive transitional and permanent housing to get back on their feet. One of these housing programs is Marcella’s House, which offers permanent housing for 15 veterans and was built with Low Income Housing Tax Credits in 2010. Marcella’s House was recently selected as the site of the Veterans Freedom Mural, a project of Creative District Wilmington, which was completed and dedicated in June 2016. The mural design was derived from group dialogues with veterans and members of the Wilmington community and explores a veteran’s process of their transition to civilian life. The veterans served by Connections, as well as other veterans in the community, were able to participate in the painting process of the mural. The Veterans Freedom Mural is installed on the north exterior wall of Marcella’s House, at 901-903 Washington Street in Wilmington.
